Misuse Of Contact Lenses Can Contribute To Eye Diseases

Misuse Of Contact Lenses Can Contribute To Eye Diseases

Eye diseases are excruciating and they can double your risks of infections and sight vulnerability if left untreated or unnoticed. Sometimes, eye problems become too glaring, out of nothing but our negligence. One such negligence, we do to our eyes is falling asleep with contact lenses or taking a nap with them.
Many of us, who wear contact lenses often, feel tired too to take out their lenses after a day’s hard work, and mostly do it once they get out of their bed. Well, we are not alone in this lane, so many people around the world have been reported to get used to this type of careless behavior.

Here’s what they should know about their slothful activity. According to the reports published in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report from Centers for Disease Control And Prevention (CDC), people, who take a nap or fall asleep with their lenses are six to eight times more likely to increase their vulnerability to eye infections.
As per the researchers of the study, sleeping with contact lenses is one of the riskiest human behaviors that lead to cornea related eye diseases.

Eye Infections Stemming From Contact Lenses

Corneal infections caused due to contact lenses are called microbial keratitis, is the most common form of eye infections occurred to those who wear contact lenses. The lens wearer is actually exposed to this type of infection when their corneas are infected by bacteria or another type of microbes.

The report suggests a wide range of eye infections due to contact lenses are worn for longer periods of time at a stretch from sleeping to even showering.
Under the study by CDC, they studied six different cases of patients, who developed microbial keratitis as they slept with their lenses. With contact lenses in the eyes, it had caused a few patients corneal damage, permanent loss of sight, and even an immediate eye surgery.

Another case of a patient, who did not take his lenses out, and kept on sleeping for a few days longer and even swimming in them, had developed more severe eye disease.
If you are likely to act this way, the outcome of your behavior could be more severe as it can lead to loss of vision just like it did cause to the 34-year-old man. A month later, the man developed a different type of microbial keratitis known to be Acanthamoeba keratitis.

What Is Acanthamoeba Keratitis?
eye infection

Sleeping with contact lenses for a couple of months could lead to redness and blurring of the eyes. Although the symptoms may appear like bacterial and fungal infections, it may appear to be something different like that of Acanthamoeba Keratitis. It is a rare type of eye disease caused by a single cell organism called amoeba. The conditions of Acanthamoeba keratitis can be improved, but by the time it is treated, it can do a lot of damage to your eyes, and the most severe is eyesight loss. Upon confronting this vision complication, one needs to keep his sight intact by switching to rigid contact lenses.

The scares of eye disease due to microbial keratitis are unending. If you sleep with over-the-counter contact lenses, it is likely to cause you a bacterial infection called Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacterial infection. This bacterial infection can cause an ulcer in your cornea. Even though it is cured using an eye drop, it can leave your cornea fibers scarred permanently.

Sometimes, a good night’s sleep with your contact lenses can prove dangerous as it can lead to a perforated ulcer in your cornea, prompting for a cataract surgery and even corneal transplant.

Thing You Can Do

These are some of the indications that you should not sleep with contact lenses in your eyes. The FDA approved contact lenses do have a recommendation for one overnight use, but it can also increase your vulnerability to infections.
So, be careful and take your ophthalmologist’s advice while using a contact lens.
